La ambición de Bill Gates no parece tener limites, al menos la demostración ya es un hecho. Quisiera entender que Bill Gates no tiene ahora otra cosa que hacer para ganarse la confianza del publico con windows8 que intentar reparar sus propios errores del pasado. Retrocediendo hasta los primeros comienzos de Windows; en concreto de 3.X, 3.11, y Windows95, la seguridad siempre ha sido nula en sus productos. Desde que se creo la primera versión de Windows Bill Gates nunca se molesto en integrar algo tan simple como un antivirus y un cortafuegos; quizá porque estaba mas interesado en ganar dinero a manos llenas y la cuestión de la "responsabilidad de la seguridad" y que ocurriera con el Pc del usuario, eso aparentemente no era asunto suyo. Haciendo una comparación; es como si los fabricantes de coches, fabricaran coches sin importarles la seguridad de sus usuarios, y después de años de accidentes y víctimas, tuvieran una revelación de que la venta de sus productos tiene mucha mas aceptación si se promueve la seguridad.

Microsoft un elefante en una cacharrería de la seguridad

Volviendo a Windows8, a Microsoft parece haberle ocurrido algo parecido. Ha sido una ocurrencia repentina pero en realidad viene como consecuencia de años de lloverle millones de criticas sobre la evidente "inseguridad" de windows; por lo que finalmente se ha visto forzado primero a integrar un cortafuegos en XP y en versiones superiores, y ahora parece que también quiere integrar un Antivirus. Sin embargo ¿Cual es origen de todos estos cambios? ¿Porque solo en las ultimas décadas Microsoft toma consciencia de la seguridad para sus sistemas operativos de usuario, y ha decidido integrar un cortafuegos y recientemente un antivirus?. Básicamente todo se resume en la idea de que en un comienzo Microsoft solo tenia como objetivo vender unidades de su producto a destajo; le importo muy poco lo que ocurriera con su sistema operativo y la situación de desprotección e inseguridad en que dejaba al usuario, y por tanto, dejo un enorme hueco de inseguridad que rápidamente cubrieron otras empresas como karpesky, panda, AVG y otras marcas en materia de antivirus que han sido pioneras en esos mercados dando seguridad. Son estas empresas las que han hecho el trabajo duro de proteger Windows y no el propio fabricante de Windows. El lector debería de ser mas perspicaz con estos detalles y no sobrevalorar tanto a Microsoft, Bill Gates, y Windows.

El problema de integrar un antivirus en Windows8 se podría parabolizar con ese proverbio que dice: "Siempre hay quien agita el árbol y otros se llevan las nueces". El asunto de fabricar Windows8 con un antivirus no es mala idea; todo lo contrario, es una mejora para la seguridad. Es la ley de Kawling: "Cualquier otra cosa siempre es mejor". Pero en realidad es una iniciativa que viene con décadas de retraso y durante todo ese periodo han ocurrido muchas cosas en el mercado del software de seguridad; ya que Microsoft lo dejo en un estado de libre albedrío, sin preocuparse por asegurar su sistema operativo. Ahora, casi de forma ocurrente y algo fuera de lugar, Microsoft descubre que Windows8 debería tener un antivirus de fabrica porque espera vender mas unidades de su Windows8 en comparación con Windows7, ¡Que casualmente no tiene antivirus! ¿No le parece al lector que esta reacción no convence ni al mas aficionado?.

El anuncio de que el sistema Windows8 vendrá con un antivirus incorporado no es mas que otra demostración de que Microsoft no tiene inconveniente en entrometerse en un terreno del que nunca se ha preocupado. Para Microsoft irrumpir en un mercado que ahora que ya esta perfectamente establecido es muy fácil, y hacer negocios con la seguridad después de que otros ya han trabajado duro para inventar y crear sus soluciones y productos de seguridad, tapando todos los agujeros de "inseguridad" que dejo Bill Gates desde versiones anteriores de Windows es todo ventajas. Sí señor, es muy fácil mirar las ideas que ya están hechas y funcionando y crear a partir de ahí, porque básicamente es a lo que esta acostumbrado Bill Gates, a digamos "inspirarse en el trabajo ajeno" y crear a partir de lo ya construido pero sin hacer nunca nada desde cero; porque si en algo es un maestro Microsoft, es en el arte de la imitación.

¿Quién gana y quién pierde con esta Pseudo Seguridad?

En todo argumento siempre hay dos lados, y esto supone que alguien en un extremo gana, pero en el punto opuesto también alguien pierde. La empresa antivirus Sophos, comento que esta medida afectará directamente a las compañías que se enfocan la venta de seguridad a consumidores que usan Windows. Por otro lado aquí se plantean cuestiones que casi traspasan la propia idea de la seguridad. ¿Se puede confiar en los cortafuegos y antivirus que fabrique Microsoft, sabiendo que le gusta tener control sobre cada Windows que vende al usuario? ¿Como saber que las medidas de seguridad que integra Microsoft en Windows8 realmente protegen al usuario y no tienen otros propósitos? ¿Como saber si tu windows8 no sera vulnerable a ataques cuando interese a Microsoft?. Se que los planteamientos expuestos quizá rozan un poco la conspiranoia informática, pero con Windows nos jugamos la seguridad, y el lector debe siempre estar vigilando lo que hace la mano izquierda, con el ojo derecho bien abierto, porque de Microsoft nadie se puede fiar. De momento, y a falta de mas datos, yo sigo recomendando el uso de un cortafuegos y un antivirus de algún buen fabricante como Karpesky, AVG, Panda, Sophos, etc, ect, ya que se puede presuponer que están mas interesados en promover la seguridad de lo que realmente ha estado Microsoft durante décadas atrás.

Instructions

The Network Monitor core engine has been decoupled from the parser set. To install the full Network Monitor 3.4 product:

Run the setup.exe for the platform you are installing.
You will be prompted first to install the core engine. Follow the installationdirections. Make sure you close existing instances of netmon.exe, nmcap.exeand any running NMAPI applications.

Muchos usuarios sufren cada vez más por conseguir la nueva versión de Windows7, encontrar el crack y evitar que Microsoft no detecte que están trabajando con una versión pirata. Es posible que con la versión de Windows8 los usuarios sigan sufriendo de forma innecesaria cuando tienen como alternativa gratuita la versión 11 de Ubuntu y también no tardando mucho la próxima versión 12 de Linux Ubuntu. En esta ocasión traigo noticias interesantes a los seguidores de ubuntu.

Mark Shuttleworth el responsable de Ubuntu Linux, la distribución Linux mas popular del momento ha anunciado la siguiente versión de Ubuntu. Por supuesto es la versión aún por comenzar a desarrollar. El nombre sera Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolín”.

Al margen de que el Pangolín sea uno de los mamíferos mas resistentes al ataque de los leones, Shuttleworth hace con ello una insinuación indirecta a sus competidores; Windows, Mac, y Unix. El Pangolín es un animal cuyo cuerpo está recubierto de duras escamas. Según Shuttleworth “sus escamas son una maravilla del diseño de la naturaleza".

Algunos de los nuevos

• Quitaron el top de 40 horas de música libre. Ahora la gente puede escuchar música todo lo que desee de forma gratuita.

• “Mejora” auto-completar las opciones y sugerencias personalizadas diseñadas para hacer “nuevas estaciones y descubrir nueva música o comedia más intuitiva y personal.”

• “Mejora” perfiles de escucha y un avance de la nueva música, donde los oyentes pueden “encontrar, como y hacer comentarios sobre lo que los amigos y oyentes de ideas afines están descubriendo y disfrutando de Pandora.” También hay un nuevo botón “Compartir” y la estación tienen su propia URL para que pueda enviar sus estaciones de amigos y familiares a través de sitios de medios sociales con mayor facilidad. Pandora pondrá en marcha el alimento sociales nuevos en los próximos días.

I developed this when I occasionally used to work from home at my last company. I accessed my email and other applications via Citrix, which used to automatically disconnect me after 15 minutes of inactivity. It's very easy to get distracted at home (kids, lunch, etc) for more than 15 minutes, and so reconnecting was very frustrating.

This little application enabled me to keep my session alive whilst I was away from my computer.

Every 30 seconds, the mouse cursor will trace the outline of the Move Mouse application, and then send a left mouse click to wherever the mouse was last positioned. Please make sure you position the mouse cursor over something that will not react to a left mouse click!

Microsoft® Windows® User State Migration Tool (USMT) version 3.0.1 migrates user files and settings during deployments of Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista. El 95% de los padres descubre que sus hijos acceden a materiales pornograficos, según un estudio de BitDefender

Un reciente estudio revela que el software de control parental utilizado por los padres para bloquear el acceso de sus hijos a sitios con contenido pornográfico para adultos, es fácilmente desactivado por los propios adolescentes.

La empresa proveedora de seguridad y Antivirus, BitDefender, ha publicado recientemente los resultados de un preocupante estudio que se centra principalmente en los diferentes aspectos de la exposición de los niños/adolescentes a estos material sexualmente explícitos en Internet. La media de edad a la que el niño empieza la búsqueda de sitios con contenido pornográfico para adultos se sitúa en torno a los 11 años de edad.

Para este estudio, la empresa encuesto a una muestra de 1,570 padres de cinco países diferentes sobre el uso que ellos y sus hijos hacen de Internet, especialmente aquellos relacionados con material pornográfico.

Los resultados del estudio revelan que mientras el 97% de los encuestados utiliza algún tipo software de control parental para bloquear el acceso de sus hijos a sitios con contenido para adultos, el 12% de sus hijos adolescentes ha logrado desinstalar o desbloquear este software sin demasiada dificultad, lo cual es preocupante.

“La parte más interesante de este estudio fue la relacionada con el control parental. Incluso si los padres comprenden la necesidad instalar este tipo de software en los Computadores de sus hijos, y asumen la necesidad de vigilar sus actividades mientras navegan por las redes sociales y en Internet, en general, los niños son listos y siempre encuentran la manera de acceder a contenido para adultos", señala Jocelyn Otero, Responsable de Marketing de BitDefender para España, Portugal y Latinoamérica, que añade: BitDefender quiere mandar un mensaje muy claro a los padres: es más importante que nunca dar los pasos necesarios para proteger a los menores en internet de verse expuestos a material sexualmente explícito”

Por otro lado, el 62% de los adultos admitieron que en algún momento habían buscado y accedido a webs con contenido para adultos. Además, el 87% asegura que permitiría a sus hijos buscar este tipo de material en Internet, aunque con una condición: que esa búsqueda se produzca cuando sus hijos superen la edad de 19 años o quizá más.

Cómo protegerse contra fraudes electrónicos en Facebook

Facebook ha sido el blanco de algunos de los gusanos de más alto perfil, virus y estafas en la web . Siga estos pasos que les recomiendo para protegerse contra los fraudes de phishing en Facebook.
1- Conocer lo que lo puede infectar. La estafa de phishing en Facebook más reciente se asemeja a la del virus Koobface en su técnica de infección. Los usuarios reciben un correo electrónico que se genera automáticamente desde una cuenta de amigos infectados. El correo electrónico contiene un título genérico, como “mira esto”, seguido de un enlace. Cuando el usuario hace clic en el enlace de Facebook, son llevados a un sitio web que está diseñado para parecerse al sitio web de Facebook, donde se le pide que vuelva a introducir su nombre de usuario y password de Facebook. El nuevo sitio luego roba la información de los usuarios y lo utiliza para acceder a la cuenta de usuarios de Facebook donde se envía el mismo correo electrónico nefasto a todos los usuarios infectados amigos de Facebook y los contactos.
2- Precaver. Algunas precauciones con sentido común pueden ayudar a las redes sociales como Facebook a evitar estafas de phishing: (1) Nunca haga clic en un enlace si usted tiene dudas sobre su origen. Si no está seguro, ya sea llamando o enviando mensajes instantáneos a la cuenta del amigo(s) que le envió el enlace para asegurarse de que se trataba de ellos. (2) Del mismo modo, evite hacer descargas de cualquier enlace sospechoso. (3) Cuando usted sigue un enlace, preste atención al URL. Cualquier cambio inusual en la URL principal (la información que viene antes de la primera barra (el “/”) podría ser un indicador de que se haya desplazado a un sitio diferente que puede o no ser digno de confianza. (4) Por último, tenga en cuenta que Facebook no le pide a los usuarios volver a conectarse simplemente para ver material o descargar una nueva aplicación de Facebook. Por lo tanto, si usted encuentra que se le pide que introduzca su información de registro por segunda vez, esto debe ser considerado como una advertencia inmediata.
3- QUÉ HACER SI YA ESTÁ INFECTADO: Si usted cree que ya es víctima de alguna estafa de “phishing” en Facebook, simplemente inicie su sesión y cambie su contraseña. Asimismo, sería conveniente cambiar su contraseña en sitios relacionados que se han vinculado a Facebook (por ejemplo, si se ha conectado Picasa a Facebook y utiliza la contraseña de Facebook como su contraseña de Picasa, pues cambie su configuración de usuario en Picasa.

Hay que tener cuidado al conectarse al Internet WiFi en lugares públicos. No tener conocimientos puede poner en peligro todos sus archivos y el sistema pudiera estar vulnerable a cualquier virus.
Para evitar estos problemas deberías tomar las siguientes precauciones:
1. Selecciona una red segura, si no tiene la contraseña verifique de donde está saliendo la señal y pregúnte si le pudiera facilitar la clave para conectarse. Muchos lugares como cafeterías y aeropuertos ya lo ofrecen gratuitamente.
2. Selecciona “Red Pública” después de conectarte exitosamente a la red.
3. Utiliza Redes Públicas Virtuales como un túnel de seguridad. Puedes descargar Hotspot Shield o GoTrusted Secure Tunnel.
4. Esconde los archivos que puedan ser sensible a un ataque, por ejemplo la carpeta de Windows.
5. Evita el uso de Internet Banking en WiFi públicos.
6. Evita salvar contraseñas en las páginas que visites. Utiliza 1Password para codificar tus contraseñas. El robo de identidad en Facebook y Twitter va en aumento en estos lugares.
7. Utiliza HTTPS y SSL. Si entras a una página Web que requiere seguridad, verifica si el URL dice “https://”.
8. Elimina data sensible de tu portátil, como archivos en excel de bancos o documentos que puedan tener información personal.

San Valentín amenaza a los usuarios de redes sociales

Las redes sociales intensamente utilizadas por los usuarios son ahora el objetivo de los ciber-estafadores durante las fechas de San Valentín. Según informa el centro de alertas de la empresa de Antivirus BitDefender, los usuarios de redes sociales deben tener mucho cuidado con las aplicaciones extra que les son ofrecidas y que se instalan de forma automatica en Facebook, ya que muchas de estas aplicaciones son falsas y utilizan a San Valentín como cebo son fraudulentas.

BitDefender alerto hace unos dias a los usuarios a ser más cautelosos este año y a tener cuidado con las invitaciones o aplicaciones que reciban a traves del Facebook, ya que una parte de ellas son falsas y solo buscan apropiarse de las cuentas de los usuarios o simplemente inundarles con spam. La empresa de antivirus ofrecio la siguiente lista publica de estafas que podrían poner en riesgo tu cuenta de facebook:

Mensajes que prometen compartir consejos para San Valentín - Al acceder al enlace y permitir el acceso a una aplicación que promete revelar “12 cosas que una chica quiere que un chico sepa", por ejemplo, los usuarios de redes sociales corren el riesgo de que sus muros - y las páginas de sus amigos – terminen inundadas por mensajes no deseados y generados automáticamente por esta aplicación.

Mensajes que prometen revelar la existencia de admiradores secretos - Si bien esto puede ser una oferta muy atractiva, los miembros de la red social no deben caer en la trampa. Al permitir que este tipo de aplicaciones se instalen en sus cuentas, permiten al estafador publicar automáticamente mensajes no deseados en sus muros y en las páginas de sus amigos.

Los mensajes que ayudan a difundir en Facebook versiones muy conocidas de fraudes de San Valentín – Por ejemplo, el clásico fraude "Descubre quién ha mirado tu perfil" se convierte en "mi ex es quien más mira mi perfil, descubre quién es tu principal seguidor”. La aplicación de esta estafa publica falsos mensajes en el muro de la víctima y en las páginas de sus amigos. Como estos mensajes parecen provenir de alguien conocido y simulan falsos debates Facebook en el que varios de los amigos de la víctima parece que han comentado, es muy probable que la estafa se propague rápidamente. Al detectar este tipo de mensajes, los usuarios deben comprobar que la cuenta del remitente no está afectada.

“Los días significativos han sido una fuente importante de inspiración para los estafadores sociales desde hace muchos años. Las estafas de San Valentín, aunque esperadas y previsibles, tienen todavía bastante éxito debido a su atractivo emocional. Cada año, millones de usuarios siguen toda clase de vínculos sospechosos con la esperanza de encontrar a su pareja “especial”. Las redes sociales están ahí para promover la vinculación y el intercambio de información, pero los usuarios deben ser conscientes de las trampas en las que pueden caer dentro de estos entornos”, explicó Jocelyn Otero, Responsable de Marketing de BitDefender para España y Portugal.

Hackers del Mossad usaron un Troyano Informático para localizar y asesinar a un Comandante de Hamas en Dubai

El servicio secreto Israelí, el Mossad utilizo un Programa Troyano para vigilar a un elemento de Hamas.

Una profunda investigación realizada por periodistas a lo largo del 2010 ha permitido saber que el Mossad utilizo un programa hacker, en concreto un Troyano Informatico para controlar todos los movimientos y actividades en Internet del comandante militar de Hamas, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.

La noticia llega vía informe de la revista GQ realizada por el periodista de investigación israelí Ronen Bergman, que llevaron a cabo extensas entrevistas con ex-agentes de inteligencia israelíes y europeos tras el incidente.

El 20 de enero de 2010, una camarera de habitaciones del Hotel Al Bustan Rotana en Dubai encontró a un hombre muerto en su habitación. El hombre, que había entrado un día antes en el país con un nombre falso, fue identificado como Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, un alto comandante militar de Hamas.

Una revisión de las grabaciones de seguridad de videovigilancia del circuito cerrado de televisión, junto con la investigación que siguió lapolicíaa a determinado que Al-Mabhouh fue asesinado por un escuadrón de la muerte de al menos once personas, que supuestamente eran agentes del Mossad.

Bergman informa que, en realidad, el equipo enviado para preparar y ejecutar el asesinato del comande de Hamas contó por lo menos 27 miembros, y fue parte de una unidad de elite del Mossad conocido como Cesarea.

El equipo aparentemente realizaba una exhaustiva operación de vigilancia en Dubai, nueve meses antes de que llegara el comandante de Hamas a fin de establecer la verdadera identidad del objetivo, sin que existiera posibilidad de error.

En noviembre de 2009 incluso trató de envenenar al-Mabhouh, pero a pesar de caer muy enfermo, el comandante de Hamas fue capaz de recuperarse.

Bergman afirma que el Mossad sabía con antelación que el 19 de enero el comandante de Hamas tenia previsto viajar a Dubai, ya que habían logrado infiltrar un troyano en su PC Portátil, que se ejecutaba en modo oculto, precisamente interceptando su correo electrónico.

Lo que el Mossad no sabía, sin embargo, era el hotel donde tenia previsto alojarse. Debido a la ausencia de este dato, varios pequeños comandos del Mossad fueron enviados a todos los hoteles donde al-Mabhouh se había alojado en el pasado y los agentes también montaron un dispositivo de vigilancia e interceptación en el aeropuerto para que al llegar lo siguieran hasta el hotel.

Para realizar esta complicada operación de eliminación, propia de una novela de espías, los agentes del Mossad volaron a distintas horas y diferentes lugares de Europa, utilizando pasaportes extranjeros falsos, un hecho que fue detectado y dio lugar a tensiones diplomáticas entre Israel, Reino Unido, Irlanda, Australia, Francia y Alemania, poco después de conocerse el incidente.

"Creo que tenemos que reconocer que las agencias de inteligencia y los gobiernos de todo el mundo ya no tienen escrúpulos al usar las modernas técnicas hacker y emplear programas de malware en Internet, o cualquier otra herramienta de espionaje cibernéticas, si creen que con eso pueden obtener alguna ventaja sobre sus enemigos", señala Graham Cluley, consultor senior de tecnología de Sophos.

Una investigación de la empresa de Antivirus BitDefender, advierte a los usuarios sobre los riesgos de seguridad informática que supone acceder a sitios web con contenidos para adultos. El estudio BitDefender de revela que el 63% de los usuarios que buscaron contenidos pornográficos en Internet, lo han hecho poniendo en peligro la seguridad de sus ordenadores en más de una ocasión. El 78% de los hombres y el 22% de las mujeres que fueron encuestados para este estudio admitió haber buscado pornografía en la Red alguna vez. Y lo que es peor, un 25% de ellos lo hizo desde el lugar de trabajo, poniendo en grave riesgo las redes de las empresas.

La investigación de la empresa se centró en dos principales aspectos: por un lado una encuesta sobre el trasfondo psicológico y el tipo de contenidos pornográficos online que buscaron los usuarios, y por otro una investigación con el objetivo de identificar el tipo de virus, troyanos y malware que frecuentemente suelen ocultar estos sitios y las cuestiones relacionadas con la privacidad de los mismos.

De una muestra de 2.017 usuarios encuestados para el estudio, el 72% admitieron haber buscado y accedido a sitios web con contenido para adultos (78% de hombres y 22 % de mujeres). El material pornográfico más visitado, con un impresionante 91%, son los videos que pueden descargarse de distintas fuentes (torrents, sitios Web, etc.) Las webs con contenido adulto en tiempo real, como vídeo-chats, citas adultas, etc. ocuparon el segundo lugar en las preferencias de los encuestados (72%).

Además el 69% de los entrevistados declaró que por lo general accede a estas webs desde casa, aunque el 25% reconoció hacerlo desde su lugar de trabajo y sólo el 6% desde otros lugares (cibercafés, etc.) Sus motivaciones principales fueron la necesidad de relajarse (54%) y la curiosidad (38%).

“El estudio arrojo algunos aspectos interesantes relacionados con la ciberdelincuencia. Un 63% de los encuestados admitieron haber tenido más de una vez problemas relacionados con el malware como consecuencia directa de acceder a webs con contenido pornográfico. El estudio indica que los usuarios deberían ser algo más cautos y reflexionar si realmente resulta sensato poner en peligro sus ordenadores PC personales, sus datos y su puesto de trabajo por el placer de acceder a este tipo de webs”, señala Jocelyn Otero, Responsable de Marketing de BitDefender para España, Portugal y Latinoamérica.

Overview
There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.

Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.

SyncToy2.1 is powered by the latest synchronization engine from Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 and provides better performance and robustness. The new features and improvements included in SyncToy 2.1 release are:

Better Performance: The speed of file copy operations is significantly increased across the board.

Improved Robustness: Much more resilient to transient network and file system errors and better error reporting which pin-points which file the sync failed on in case there’s a fatal error that stops the sync.

Folder pair configuration backup: Folder pair configuration is automatically backed up under %localappdata%\microsoft\synctoy\2.0. User can replace SyncToyDirPairs.bin with the backup copy to resolve last saved configuration.

Bug Fixes:

Fixed the data corruption issue when using SyncToy with NAS drives.

Fixed the issue that prevented uploading files to SharePoint when using SyncToy 2.0.

Fixed the issue that prevented delete changes from being synchronized when the sync option is set to “Echo”.

Fixed the UI issue where reported file time were off by the difference between local time and UTC when destination is a FAT volume.

The major new features and improvements included in previous SyncToy 2.0 release are:

Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.

True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.

Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.

Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).

Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.

Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.

Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.

Re-Architect Sync Engine: The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.

Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.

Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.

64-Bit Support: SyncToy now has a native 64-bit build (x64 only) for 64-bit versions of Windows.

Folder pair rename

Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents created under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded. Usability improvements for the sub-folder exclusion dialog.

Folder Pair Metadata Moved: Folder pair metadata removed from MyDocuments to resolve any issues with server-based folder pair re-direction setup.

Setup Improvements: Integrated setup with single self-extracting archive file and no extra downloads if you already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Enabled silent install for the SyncToy Installer file (see readme.txt file for more information).

About LAME
Following the great history of GNU naming, LAME originally stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder. LAME started life as a GPL'd patch against the dist10 ISO demonstration source, and thus was incapable of producing an mp3 stream or even being compiled by itself. But in May 2000, the last remnants of the ISO source code were replaced, and now LAME is the source code for a fully LGPL'd MP3 encoder, with speed and quality to rival and often surpass all commercial competitors.

LAME is an educational tool to be used for learning about MP3 encoding. The goal of the LAME project is to use the open source model to improve the psycho acoustics, noise shaping and speed of MP3. LAME is not for everyone - it is distributed as source code only and requires the ability to use a C compiler. However, many popular ripping and encoding programs include the LAME encoding engine, see: Software which uses LAME.

Windows 7 Problem Steps Recorder: miracle tool

If you’ve ever offered technical support to other computer users, you might find yourself losing a slice of your sanity over their inability to describe the problem clearly. And most times it’s not the fault of the user, it’s just difficult to describe what you see with words. A feature new to Windows 7, called “Problem Steps Recorder” looks to be the missing tool for documenting where it all goes wrong.

What the tool is a simple but advanced variation of a screen capture software. Think of it as an automated “Print Screen” plus a little monkey in the background documenting all the mouse clicks, key strokes and gathers some technical reading material, who then ties up everything in a neat box and saves the results. The neat little box you get is a zipped MHTML report page which can be sent off directly to the help desk.

The report page is where this tool really shines. It actually is an XML page documenting each step of the user’s actions complete with a screenshot with the item highlighted. You can view the report as is, or as a slideshow, or even dig into the raw XML to expose greater detail like the X&Y coordinates of the mouse.

Here’s a report I prepared earlier for your viewing pleasure. You must use Internet Explorer to view MHTMLs.

El día en el que el tío Bill salvó a Apple

Ayer se cumplieron doce años de la famosa aparición de Bill Gates en la pantalla gigante de la MacWorld Expo detrás de Steve Jobs para anunciar la compra de 150 millones de dólares en acciones para contribuir a salvar a Apple. La imagen gigante del entonces enemigo acerrimo de Apple empequeñeciendo a Jobs y anunciando que iba a proporcionar un chaleco salvavidas para Apple, cobra en estos tiempos de crisis un interesante significado, con Apple viento en popa y Microsoft bajando ingresos.

En la MacWorld Expo de Boston, el 6 de agosto de 1997, se vivieron emociones contradictorias, se pudieron escuchar abucheos, aplausos, gritos de apoyo, silencios tensos… Concurrieron dos acontecimientos importantes para la historia de Apple. Por un lado retornaba el hijo pródigo. Steve Jobs, que había sido apartado en 1985 de la directiva de la compañía, volvía para dar esperanzas con un plan de recuperación ambicioso.

En pleno show en el que los aficionados celebraba su reaparición como posible salvador, Jobs comenzó a hablar de Microsoft, ante la sorpresa y el rechazo de algunos. Y entonces dijo "Necesitamos deshacernos de algunos conceptos. Necesitamos deshacernos del concepto de que para que Apple gane Microsoft tiene que perder". Era el preludio al segundo acontecimiento histórico del día.

Bill Gates aparecía entonces acogido por sonoros abucheos en una pantalla gigante para anunciar a los fans de Apple que su compañía iba a comprar 150 millones de dólares en acciones de Apple sin derecho a voto. La conmoción entre los aficionados fue grande, Bill Gates era la imagen del enemigo natural de Apple y para desconcierto de los asistentes estaba tendiendo un bote salvavidas a una compañía que atravesaba unos difíciles momentos económicos.

Hay que tener en cuenta que en esos momentos el enfrentamiento entre Apple y Microsoft había llegado a los tribunales. Apple había denunciado que Microsoft había copiado elementos del sistema operativo de los ordenadores Mac para incorporarlo a su propio Windows. Las relaciones entre ambas compañías eran más que tensas, hasta que llegó Steve Jobs.

Por parte de Apple el acuerdo suponía el apoyo de la compañía durante cinco años al Office para Mac y la incorporación de Internet Explorer como navegador por defecto, aunque no el único, además de cruce de pantentes y colaboración en el desarrollo Java. Lo que no apareció en la pantalla gigante del palacio de congresos de Boston fue la renuncia de Apple a seguir con el pleito por la apropiación de elementos del sistema por parte de Microsoft.

Como dijeron entonces muchos analistas, Apple necesitaba a Microsoft mucho más de lo que Microsoft necesitaba a Apple. La renuncia al juicio no puede considerarse significativa, pues seguramente Microsoft habría podido llegar a un acuerdo por mucho menos de los 150 millones que invirtió finalmente en la compañía.

Por otra parte el apoyo de Apple al Office e Internet Explorer para Mac, no deja de ser anecdótico para una empresa con la cifra de negocio que manejaba entonces Microsoft. Algunos analistas apuntaron que las autoridades antimonopolio de Estados Unidos estaban apretando las tuercas a Microsoft y que posiblemente la desaparición de Apple le habría traído más problemas que la cuota de mercado que podría arrebatar a Microsoft si sobrevivía.

En cualquier caso no se puede descartar el factor personal. Con el tiempo hemos sabido que Steve Jobs y Bill Gates se respetan, incluso se admiran. En una entrevista conjunta en All Things Done, los dos personajes se intercambiaron elogios y muestras de admiración.

Es posible que simplemente Steve Jobs se presentara en el despacho de Bill Gates y le dijera "tengo un proyecto, pero necesito ayuda" y que Gates se la ofreciera. Lo que parece seguro por comentarios que se le atribuyen, es que si Steve Ballmer hubiera ocupado ese mismo despacho no hubiera concedido esos 150 millones de dólares.

Esos 150 millones suponían entonces el 6% de las acciones de Apple. Permitieron a Steve Jobs poner en marcha sus proyectos estratégicos como el nuevo iMac, reducir las líneas de producto y cambiar la imagen de la compañía. Es posible que sin ese bote salvavidas de Microsoft no hubiésemos visto nacer iconos como el iMac, el iPod, el iPhone…

Ahora sin embargo el panorama ha cambiado. Apple, gracias entre otras cosas a los cambios que puso en marcha Jobs, se ha convertido en una de las compañías tecnológicas más innovadoras pero también más rentables en estos momentos de crisis. Con respecto al mismo trimestre del año pasado, Apple presentaba a finales de junio unos beneficios un 12 por ciento superiores.

En Microsoft, a la espera del lanzamiento de Windows 7 y del nuevo Office, han acusado el golpe de la crisis y han tenido un descenso de los ingresos de un 17 por ciento respecto al año anterior. No parece factible que se cambien ahora las tornas y que sea Ballmer el que le pida ayuda a Jobs. Los tiempos han cambiado y aunque Ballmer insista en decir que Apple no daña al negocio de Microsoft, no puede uno evitar pensar qué hubiera sido de Microsoft si no hubiera ayudado a Apple.

Mientras su enfrentamiento sigue con golpes recíprocos en los anuncios para televisión, ambas compañías tienen otras cosas de las que preocuparse. Una compañía a la que en 1997 aún le faltaba un año por nacer domina las búsquedas en Internet y amenaza con entrar con fuerza en mercados como el de los navegadores o los sistemas operativos. Google puede convertirse en el enemigo común.
